Our charges are too low — New Mulago Hospital responds to critics
Newly opened Mulago Specialized Women and Neonatal Hospital opened doors with wide range of services but unlike public expectation, high rates were slapped on those services. Responding to the outcry, Mr. Enock Kusasira, the Mulago Referral Hospital PRO has defended the charges saying the Ministry of Health carried sufficient research before coming up with the figures.
“By the time we come out with procedures of this nature we have carried out research. When coming up with the prices, we were looking at Ugandans generally and the patients we’ve been receiving at Mulago, we looked at the private patients as well, ” Kusasira explained.
Kusasira asked the public to appreciate the state of the art facility, a first of it’s kind in a public hospital.
“This is a state of the art facility, a 450 capacity, a comprehensive super specialized facility for women. We are going to offer services we’ve never offered before in a public hospital.”
Kusasira added; “This is a public facility where we have cost sharing, we have different levels and one can choose according to their pocket, for those who can’t afford, they’ll be worked on.”
