Breaking: Leaked Galaxy Note 9 Android Pie firmware reveals new user interface

Thanks to a leaked Galaxy Note 9 Android Pie beta build obtained by the folks over at XDA Developers, we are getting a look at the new Samsung Experience 10 user interface on Samsung’s latest Note flagship. We have already got a detailed look at Samsung Experience 10 with the previously leaked Android 9 build for the Galaxy S9.

Samsung Experience 10 brings major user interface changes, which isn’t surprising. It’s the next iteration of Samsung’s custom skin for Android after all.

Leaked Galaxy Note 9 Android Pie firmware

Like the Galaxy S9 firmware, the Galaxy Note 9 Android Pie firmware comes with a new dark and transparent theme for the notification shade, quick toggles, and the Settings app. It’s still a work in progress so things look quite half-baked, but it does show the kind of direction Samsung is taking. The Settings app, for example, gets a black background with white cards for the various setting menus, which will change to gray when the new Night theme is enabled.

Many of Samsung’s native apps, such as Messages and Contacts, are also getting a makeover. The camera app has the different camera modes at the bottom of the screen now, with the AR Emoji and Bixby Vision options moved to the top. The camera interface is not unlike what we see on the Galaxy A7. For example, there’s a new button for switching to the telephoto lens for zooming in on a scene. AR Emoji quality has reportedly improved a bit, although that’s not totally confirmed at this point.

No word on a beta program yet

The leaked firmware is for the Snapdragon variant of the Galaxy Note 9. There are plenty of bugs, which is to be expected at this point in time. The amount of changes that Samsung seems to be making suggests that the Pie updates for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 will probably not come out this year, even with Project Treble lending a hand.

It’s also unknown if a beta program is on the cards. Samsung’s Android Oreo beta program wasn’t exactly fruitful as many issues slipped through into the official release, so one can hope the company will do a better job this time around.
