DC: ‘Conor didn’t deserve that,’ but religion, family, country isn’t for marketing

American Kickboxing Academy’s Daniel Cormier tweeted about the UFC 229 brawl early Sunday morning.

Daniel Cormier says a brawl broke out after Khabib Nurmagomedov’s win over Conor McGregor at UFC 229 because the fight was “really personal” for the Russian champ.

The UFC heavyweight and light heavyweight champion, who is a Nurmagomedov teammate at American Kickboxing Academy, reacted to the UFC 229 post-event brawl in a tweet early Sunday morning. “DC” said several factors played a part in the highly-anticipated lightweight title fight, and that’s why things were so heated even afterwards.

“Two wrongs don’t make it right,” Cormier wrote. “Conor didn’t deserve that. No one did. But some things aren’t for fight promotion. Religion, family, country. Throwing stuff in Brooklyn. For Khabib it wasn’t fight promotion, it was really personal. Diff culture man. Sucks.”

After UFC 229, at which Nurmagomedov tapped out McGregor in the fourth round, Nurmagomedov jumped over the cage and attacked McGregor teammate Dillon Danis. Meanwhile, two Nurmagomedov teammates hopped into the cage and went after McGregor, seemingly trading punches with him — chaos ensued.

Security eventually intervened, and both fighters were escorted out of the cage to the back. Nurmagomedov was not given the actual belt, but Bruce Buffer announced him as the champion. Nurmagomedov has not received any penalities — such as being stripped of his title — as of yet.

Three people involved in the madness were arrested but have been since released by police, according to UFC president Dana White.

White said on FS2 that Cormier, who is expected to face Brock Lesnar next year, was a big help in calming Nurmagomedov down after the brawl.

UFC 229 took place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Nurmagomedov remained undefeated at 27-0, while McGregor lost for the first time in MMA since March 2016 in what was only his second UFC defeat.
